Could this be what you’re experiencing?
Symptoms commonly discussed by patients consulting about slip disc. Everyone presents differently, so this is a starting point for conversation rather than a checklist.
Lower back pain
Often centred low in the back, sometimes to one side.
Pain down the leg
Discomfort travelling from the back into the leg or foot.
Worse on sitting or bending
Sitting, bending or coughing can intensify it.
Numbness or tingling
Pins and needles in the leg, calf or foot.

What can slip disc feel like?
A slipped (herniated) disc occurs when the soft cushioning between spinal vertebrae shifts or bulges, which can press on nearby nerves and cause pain, numbness or weakness — most often in the lower back and legs.
- Back pain
- Discomfort in the lower back, which may be constant or come in episodes.
- Radiating pain
- Pain following a path from the back into the buttock, thigh or lower leg.
- Numbness or tingling
- Altered sensation in the leg or foot, sometimes in a defined band.
- Weakness
- Reduced strength in the affected limb, which should always be assessed.
What may contribute to it?
Common contributing factors may include the following. Which of these are relevant — if any — differs from person to person, and is something the doctor works through with you during consultation.
Lifting strain
Heavy or awkward lifting that loads the spine suddenly.
Prolonged sitting
Extended sitting increases pressure through the lower spine.
Previous injury
An earlier back injury or fall.
Repetitive bending
Work involving frequent bending or twisting.
Age-related disc changes
Natural changes in disc structure over time.
These are general patterns associated with slip disc and do not establish a cause in any individual case.
When should you seek medical attention?
Most symptoms are appropriate for a routine consultation. Some, however, need prompt medical assessment rather than a scheduled appointment — including:
- Loss of bladder or bowel control — seek emergency care immediately
- Progressive weakness or numbness in the leg
- Severe pain that does not ease with rest
- Pain following a significant injury
This information is for awareness and does not replace an in-person medical assessment. If symptoms feel severe or are worsening quickly, seek immediate medical care rather than waiting for an appointment.
How your consultation may work
What actually happens when you come in to discuss slip disc — from the first conversation through to follow-up.
- 01
Understand your symptoms
The doctor discusses what you're experiencing, how long it has been going on, and what makes it better or worse.
- 02
Understand your individual pattern
Your general health, medical history, daily routine and any previous treatment are considered alongside the presenting concern.
- 03
Discuss an appropriate care plan
The doctor explains what the next steps could look like for your specific case, including any tests or referral where appropriate.
- 04
Follow-up and adjustment
Progress is reviewed at follow-up visits, and the approach is adjusted when that is clinically appropriate.
Spine-related concerns are typically monitored over multiple visits, with attention to any symptoms that would need prompt specialist referral.

Consultations here are structured around listening first. A first visit covers your presenting concern in depth — alongside your general health, history and daily routine — before any treatment direction is considered. Two people with the same diagnosis can present very differently, and that difference is what shapes an individualised approach.

Questions patients ask
This depends entirely on your specific case, including disc severity and any neurological symptoms. The doctor will give you an honest assessment and refer you for specialist or surgical evaluation where that is medically appropriate.
