Could this be what you’re experiencing?

Symptoms commonly discussed by patients consulting about piles. Everyone presents differently, so this is a starting point for conversation rather than a checklist.

  • Discomfort or itching

Irritation around the anus, often after passing stool.

  • Bleeding

Bright red bleeding during bowel movements.

  • A lump or swelling

A palpable swelling near the anus.

  • Worse with sitting

Prolonged sitting or straining aggravates it.

What can piles feel like?

Piles (haemorrhoids) are swollen blood vessels in the lower rectum or anus, often linked to constipation, prolonged sitting, straining or pregnancy. Symptoms range from mild discomfort to more noticeable bleeding or swelling.

Discomfort
Irritation, itching or soreness, commonly most noticeable after a bowel movement.
Bleeding
Bright red blood, which should always be assessed rather than assumed to be piles.
Swelling
A lump near the anus that may be tender, particularly when inflamed.
Aggravating patterns
Constipation, straining and prolonged sitting typically make symptoms worse.

What may contribute to it?

Common contributing factors may include the following. Which of these are relevant — if any — differs from person to person, and is something the doctor works through with you during consultation.

  • Constipation

Hard stools and straining during bowel movements.

  • Prolonged sitting

Extended periods seated, including long journeys.

  • Low-fibre diet

Dietary patterns that contribute to harder stools.

  • Low fluid intake

    Insufficient hydration affecting stool consistency.

  • Pregnancy

A commonly reported period for symptoms to appear.

These are general patterns associated with piles and do not establish a cause in any individual case.

When should you seek medical attention?

Most symptoms are appropriate for a routine consultation. Some, however, need prompt medical assessment rather than a scheduled appointment — including:

  • Significant or persistent bleeding
  • Severe pain or a hard, painful lump
  • Unexplained weight loss or a change in bowel habit
  • Symptoms that don't fit the usual pattern of piles

This information is for awareness and does not replace an in-person medical assessment. If symptoms feel severe or are worsening quickly, seek immediate medical care rather than waiting for an appointment.

How your consultation may work

What actually happens when you come in to discuss piles — from the first conversation through to follow-up.

  1. 01

    Understand your symptoms

The doctor discusses what you're experiencing, how long it has been going on, and what makes it better or worse.

  2. 02

    Understand your individual pattern

Your general health, medical history, daily routine and any previous treatment are considered alongside the presenting concern.

  3. 03

    Discuss an appropriate care plan

The doctor explains what the next steps could look like for your specific case, including any tests or referral where appropriate.

  4. 04

    Follow-up and adjustment

Progress is reviewed at follow-up visits, and the approach is adjusted when that is clinically appropriate.

Alongside any approach discussed, the doctor may cover dietary and lifestyle observations relevant to constipation and straining, monitored over follow-up visits.

Consultations here are structured around listening first. A first visit covers your presenting concern in depth — alongside your general health, history and daily routine — before any treatment direction is considered. Two people with the same diagnosis can present very differently, and that difference is what shapes an individualised approach.
